Exploring Negative Thought’s: How To Escape From the Darkness

“You aren’t good enough”

You will never amount to anything in life”

“You will never be great”

If you’re had these thought’s pop up in your head, congrats you’re human. We’ve all experienced moments where all we want to do is break down and cry because nothing seems to go right in our lives. Moments where you just want to succumb to the darkness because you are just tired. Dark thoughts seem to have taken control over your mind, you’re highly emotional, and the stressors of life have gotten to you. You are on the verge of being depressed and feel as if nothing good will come your way.

Today we will be exploring the origins of negative thought’s and what we can do to do overcome them. Now before you go any further, I just want to remind you all that I am NOT a mental health professional. Just think of me as a friend here to help you get through this complicated thing that we call life.

What Causes These Thoughts?

So let’s take a look at what could be causing those negative thought’s in your head. Keep in mind they usually don’t tend to just pop up out of nowhere and wreak havoc on your mind for nothing. We tend to get them when we are going through a struggle in life and nothing good seems to come out of the situation. There seems to be no light to the end of your tunnel and you are at a point where all you want to do is give up. Your peripheral vision is filled with nothing but a dark void which you can’t seem to get yourself out of. At this point, this is where depression begins to kick in and it may be time to see someone to help get your life back on track.

How Do We Overcome Them?

Overcoming negative thought’s is not always an easy task and due to it being such a unique situation, the amount of time it takes to recover varies from person to person.

There are 2 factors that come into play when it comes to the recovery time

  • Whether or not the person is struggling with pre-existing mental health issues
  • The severity of the situation and how much of an impact it has on the mind

While it is advisable to seek help if it get’s bad enough to the point where your just can’t cope with life, this is something that you may have to do on your own. Just speaking to someone simply isn’t enough and the reason why I say this is because only you truly know what’s going on in YOUR OWN head. While it’s always great to seek advice from others, unless they can somehow shrink themselves and take a look at what’s going on in your mind, it would be quite difficult for them to gauge the true magnitude of the situation and the effect it has on you. In order to help get yourself back on track with your life, below are some tips to help your overcome the negativity.

Investigate

Before you go any further with this self healing process, the first thing you must do is INVESTIGATE and figure out what the root cause of these negative thoughts are. This is very important and the reason why I say that this is because if you don’t know what’s going on with you, then how are you going to get past this issue? Every single thought that comes into your mind whether good or bad stems from something that you have gone through in life. It could be something that happened recently, a year ago, or even something that happened a really long time ago. When you feeL the negative thoughts start to flood in, take a moment find a quiet place, sit down, breathe, and focus. That inner voice inside your head will give you the answers to everything you need to know in order to aid in your healing process.

Distract Yourself

Distract the mind with activities that bring joy and peace into your life. Stimulate your mind with a good read or puzzle and keep yourself busy. Drown out those voices in your head with relatable music to vibe to vibe to whether it be jazz, hip hop, or rock. Take nice long stroll around the neighborhood and marvel at all of what mother nature has created. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it’s something that you know will work for YOU. The goal here is to find a way block out those negative thoughts and sometimes all it takes is a little distraction.

Be Your Own Hype Man

That’s right! Be your own hype man and boost yourself up! Remind yourself of who your are because with the way those thought have you acting you know that’s not you. The next time you have a bad day I want you to say this to yourself:

I am great!

Nothing can tear me down!

I fear nothing!

That rough patch that you’re going through right now will only get better in time and deep down you know it! Keep a positive attitude and push through the hard times. Don’t allow the darkness to take over you.

Keep A Journal

You’re just getting home after a long day at work or school. It’s been a long day for you and when I say long, I mean rough. From getting yelled at by your boss/professor due to your performance to getting flooded with assignments that you’re not even sure you will complete in time, you just can’t with life right now. All of a sudden, everything goes dark, you begin to feel worthless, and here come’s the negative thoughts. Now you have 2 choices to make , which one will your choose?

A.) Allow your thoughts to take over your and cry until you can’t cry anymore.

B.) Take the time to relax and write down your frustrations in either your journal or your blog.

If you chose B., then congrats because you are headed into the right direction. What we cannot do is allow these thoughts and feeling to take us out of character and wallow in our own misery. Don’t just allow that stuff to fester in your head because the longer your wait the worse it gets. Anytime you feel yourself spiraling out of control, get out your pen, open up your laptop and let it all out! Jot those feelings down as you feel them and write until you can’t write anymore. Venting is healthy and after a while of writing your will begin to feel better. All of your worries for the day are out of the way and now that your mind is cleared you can now relax.

  1. I think it is so important that you emphasize investigate and discovering the root causes of negative thoughts. Too often people brush them aside and see them as errant until it is too late.

  2. Great post! I think with this pandemic many people are feeling negative thoughts and anxiety. I am usually a very positive person, but being in isolation has taken a toll on my emotions. When I feel these thoughts, I read positive blogs, share positive quotes, and heartwarming stories, read Bible verses, go work in the yard, and contact friends and family to check in on them. I don’t allow the negativity to bring me down!

    1. Being isoltated and pretty much confined to your home can definitely put a strain on your mental health. It’s great to hear that you’ve find way to manage your thoughts, being positive is the best way to be! πŸ™‚
